More Beds at Discovery House
Discovery House is excited to announce the addition of three new supportive addiction recovery beds to their Parker Place residence in Penticton, BC. Working in partnership with BC Housing and local private supporters, these new beds will further enhance the capacity of Discovery House to provide crucial support and care to men seeking to overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.
The new carriage house addition to Discovery House’s Edna Street location in Penticton, which has been occupied since January, is the culmination of a muti-year project. The organization purchased the house in 2021 and immediately began plans to increase the use of the property. Many community partners, Under the guidance of Builder Schoenne Homes, RPR Heating and Air Conditioning, VBS Excavating, Betts Electric & Security Ltd, Penticton Home Hardware Building Centre, and others, were involved in creating this new living space.
“We cannot do the work we do without the support of our community,” said Blaine Russell, Operations Manager of Discovery House. “Many of our guys feel they are outsiders because of their addiction issues. These types of projects show them just how much our community is behind them and the work we do.”
This expansion comes at a critical time when the ongoing opioid epidemic is claiming a record number of lives and the need for addiction recovery services is more pressing than ever. The additional beds will allow more individuals to access the support and ongoing care that Discovery House offers after clients have completed the initial 90-day treatment program.
"These beds are invaluable in helping our clients get their lives back on track," Russell shared. "We find the most success when clients have the opportunity to practice and enhance recovery skills and transition back into society on a schedule that suits their individual needs."
Parker Place residence, named for Discovery House supporter Janet Parker in dedication to son Colin Parker, is a semi-independent living home. Residents at this facility have completed Discovery House’s 90-day supportive addiction treatment and pursue education, vocational, or volunteer opportunities that will serve them in the future.
“Every guy that completes our program deserves a shot at a better life,” added Russell. “We hope this project and more we have in the works will create further opportunities for more people who need a second chance after starting their journey out of addiction.”
